Macaw Encased by jinx1764 Macaw Encased by jinx1764
This is another macaw portrait, this time done against an abstract, framed background. The macaw is done in colored pencil while the frame and background is a combination of Inktense pencils and wax resist crayons.

I really love birds and love discovering new ways to draw and present them. I love the abstract background and the floating feathers. The wax resist crayons add subtle designs to the background within the variegated colors.

I really enjoyed working on this one and he turned out much better than I expected. Halfway through I wasn't sure what to think as I'm just starting to play with Inktense, but I like how vibrant and abstract they can be.

11 x 14 Bristol board approx 10+ hours

Thanks! I'm very happy with the way the background turned out, as it was a new experiment for me. I love using bright, saturated colors.

LOL, yeah I know how you feel. I thinking of doing an abstract piece just using that background technique. It turned out WAY better than I hoped.

Inktense water soluble pencils, layered, clear wax resist crayons for the designs you see (helps that I have a badass scanner) then a quick wash of water with blending before the ink dries and sets. Voila! Abstract background! And I only have the 12 pencil set right now. My hubby has been informed that he's to buy me to FULL set (like $150ish) for my birthday his summer. Oh god, what'll I do then?????

Smile at the fact that you have an AWESOME husband who'll buy that for you! Just make sure the materials don't go to waste!

Yep, on they won't go to waste. I'm already to the point of starting to need some new colored pencils.

Me too! I'm running low on dark browns. Sarah's hair kills me in every drawing I do -_- I kick myself everyday for deciding to layer each strand it's own individual colour of brown.

LOL! yeah hair can be a pain, but to get it looking perfect sometimes you've just got to do that.
